3 Steps to Making 2018 Your Year

By January 3, 2018January 15th, 20188 Comments

“New year, new me!” How many times have we heard that statement? No, better question: How many times have we seen that on Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr? I don’t know about you all, but I’m leaning towards a strong one million. Give or take 😉 But this time though, this time we are going to make 2018 our year. You ready?

Every new week, month, or year are prefect times to set goals (though, you should be setting new goals as your life sees fit, not based off a new season or yearly holiday!). But often times we are more in love with the idea of being more mature, gracious, motivated human beings than actually doing the work. We need to take a step back and re-analyze who we really are; what we want, deserve and need to improve on. So, let’s stop romanticizing fresh starts and start putting in the work that’s needed to achieve them with these 3 steps.

Step 1: Realize Your Flaws

Change isn’t feasible unless we start working from within. Let’s dig deep and be honest about what we truly need to work on. However, it will take some digging. Sit down and ask yourself, “What’s something that I’ve done that, if I were not me, I would have a problem with?” Are you overly defensive of criticism? If it’s not all about you, do you act in ways that are might be immature? When you’re uncomfortable, do you lash out? A lot of our flaws are just us acting out because something makes us feel uneasy. This  self-discovery process can be can be a painful one, so make sure you approach it with the right attitude ready to learn, accept, and dig deep!

Step 2: Being Honest About What You Really Want

Now that you know your opportunities and are working to improve, you’re ready for step two – being honest with yourself about what you really desire.

Not what everyone wants for you, not what society expects of you, but what you want for you. Do you want to change careers? Switch your major? Move out of your area? Not all the things you want are going to be obtainable in a short amount of time, and there’s no one path to getting what you want. But remember – you deserve everything you desire. Be honest with yourself.

Sit down and make a list of all the things you would be doing if you had no limitations. Then start to work your way down. How would do you get there? Who would you contact? The internet is a powerful tool; do your research & find the right resources.

Step 3: Identify The Roadblocks

You know what you need to work on, then you’ve realized your true goals; now you just have to try and get rid of the things that are keeping you from it! I’d argue that this step is the hardest. Identify what is holding you back. Become more comfortable with getting rid of the things that do not make you 100% happy. New Year’s is a great time to create change within your life. But you have to be actively trying to work towards something that’s going to benefit you. Passively sitting by and thinking the New Year magic will change your life won’t do anything – because you have to change your life! It’s not going to be easy, but the best things in life never are.

Are you ready to make 2018 your best year yet?
