We all dread waking up early in the morning, especially after a long night of working (or hanging out ;)). However, the most important part of anyone’s day is the morning! So what do all successful women have in common? They all have rituals they do when the sun rises to help them have the most productive day possible. So no more hitting that snooze button, instead, let’s add these simple routines to our morning schedule!
There’s this idea that in order to meditate, that you have to sit in silence for hours upon hours. Well, good news for us restless gals – meditating is more about focusing your mind more so than sitting still in dead silence. The health benefits of meditation are amazing, and include reduced stress, improved concentration, and can even slow aging – and there are so many ways to do it! If sitting still is best for you, get out of bed, find a comfortable place to sit, and focus your thoughts on all the things you want to achieve for the day ahead for about 10 minutes. If you need to move or hear some noise in the background, try adding some yoga poses or relaxing instrumentals!
- Check Your Emails and Calendar
How can you start your day off well if you don’t even know what you’re going to be doing? So many of us have calendars that we put everything in, but don’t even check. Start your day off right by checking your daily schedule, then checking your emails. You can even answer any texts that you missed in the wee hours of the night. Kara Goldin, CEO of Hint Water, checks her emails immediately after waking up and says, “I have to stay deliberate and conscientious about my schedule, and the morning is an especially critical part of that. Checking my emails gives me a clear understanding of what the next 12 hours are going to look like and what my priorities are once I get to the office.” If a CEO can do it, so can we!
Our moms didn’t lie – breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and skipping out is setting ourselves up for failure! A healthy breakfast gives us energy for the day ahead, restores glucose levels (an essential carbohydrate that is needed for the brain to function), and is linked to having a better performance as they day goes on. Pancakes are a nice occasional treat, but a piece of fruit with some grain within two hours of you waking up will go a long way. Also make sure to drink plenty of water – you wake up dehydrated, so you’ll need to replenish that as quickly as possible!
Doing this first thing in the morning is not only a great way to wake you up, but it can give us the time to mentally schedule our day! Morning exercise routines lead to better sleep at night, better focus, and enhances our metabolism. Working out for 60 to 90 minutes in the morning isn’t feasible for everyone, so if we need something quicker, we can try walking around the block for about 15 minutes. Oprah and Jennifer Aniston do it – so we really have no excuse!
We’re not saying it’s going to be easy, especially since most of us aren’t morning people. But with hard work and discipline, we’ll come to appreciate the mornings as the time to get ahead instead of dreading starting our day. Every new day is a day we can recreate ourselves, and if we have a morning routine, we can create the best version of ourselves!
